TRADE BEADS - THE BEGINNING OF CURRENCY

Trade Beads - The start of Currency!

TRADE BEADS are beads that were used as a medium of exchange, within communities throughout continental North America dating back as far as the 16th century.

Decorative glass beads (trade and slave beads) were used as an exchange for goods and services, and slaves (hence the name).

Europe also produced trade beads to ease the passage of trade mainly across the African continent.

European beads as of 2022, have been found in Eskimo sites in Alaska, and throughout the United States, Canada and Latin America.

Production of SLAVE BEADS became so popular that tons of these beads were produced for the purpose of slave trade, and well as gold, ivory and other goods desired in Europe.

Glass beads were a successful form of currency as they were scarce, and hard to produce, as well as its salability across space.
