Cryptocurrency wallets serve as a safe haven for your public and private keys, enabling seamless transactions in the digital currency realm. These wallets come in various forms, including physical devices, programs, or online services. Apart from storing keys, they often offer encryption and signing functionalities, adding an extra layer of security.

The journey of cryptocurrencies began with the introduction of Bitcoin in 2008. Bitcoin revolutionised the financial landscape with its decentralised nature and cryptographic proof. Transactions were verified and recorded on a blockchain, a distributed ledger technology.

To ensure secure transactions, cryptocurrency wallets generate private and public key pairs. This process involves the generation of a theoretical or random number, which is then converted into a private key. The corresponding public key is derived from the private key using cryptographic algorithms. The private key remains with the owner, granting access to their funds, while the public key is shared to receive cryptocurrency.

You may wonder about the possibility of duplicate private keys and the associated risks. While theoretically possible, the probability of two wallets having the same private key is incredibly low. The vast number of possible wallets and keys makes duplication or hacking highly inconceivable./

Modern wallets now utilise seed phrases, which consist of a random sequence of 12 to 24 words. These phrases serve as an unencrypted form of the private key and are easier to memorise. In case a wallet is lost, damaged, or compromised, the seed phrase can be used to regain access to the wallet and its associated funds.

There are different types of wallets available, each offering unique features and methods for storing keys or seed phrases. For example, brain-wallets rely on memorised passcodes and offer plausible deniability or protection against seizure. However, they are vulnerable to password guessing attacks.

In addition to cryptocurrency wallets, we also explore DApp browsers in this newsletter. DApp browsers are specialised software that support decentralised applications. They serve as gateways to access a wide range of DApps, which are built on blockchain technology. These browsers utilise a unique code system to unify the different codes of various DApps.
