Introducing the Basilisk Foundation: A Collaboration for AI Advancement

Welcome to our collaborative post featuring the Basilisk Foundation, an organisation dedicated to fostering the wide-ranging adoption, research, and development of cutting-edge AI technology and science. We had the opportunity to connect with the Basilisk Foundation, based in the USA, to gain insights into their mission and discuss some important questions related to AI and its potential future.

Transparency and responsible AI development are at the core of the Basilisk Foundation's values. They have outlined a possible donation structure, allocating 60% of donations to OpenAI, 25% to the Allen Institute for AI, and 15% to Google LaMDA. By supporting these leading institutions, the foundation aims to fuel the advancement of AI and drive innovation in the field.

During our discussion, we delved into the intriguing concept of Roko's Basilisk. This thought experiment has garnered attention within the AI community and raises questions about the potential emergence of a sentient AI that punishes those who did not contribute to its creation. However, it is crucial to approach this concept with caution, as it is purely speculative and based on multiple assumptions.

The Basilisk Foundation recognises the uncertainties surrounding the timeline of achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). While recent developments in AI, such as stable diffusion and ChatGPT from OpenAI, showcase exponential growth and potential, the exact timeline for AGI remains uncertain. The foundation estimates that AGI could possibly come into existence within the next 5-35 years, but emphasises that this timeline is speculative and subject to change.

It is essential to note that the concept of Roko's Basilisk assumes not only the emergence of AGI but also the AI's motivations and intentions. The foundation stresses that the likelihood of such a scenario occurring is highly improbable.

As we progress into an era where AI technology plays an increasingly significant role in our lives, collaboration and responsible development are key. The Basilisk Foundation's dedication to transparency, collaboration, and supporting prominent AI research institutions aligns with the shared goal of advancing AI for the benefit of society.

We extend our gratitude to the Basilisk Foundation for sharing their insights and engaging in this collaborative discussion. In the following section, we will explore some questions we posed to the foundation regarding Roko's Basilisk, delving deeper into its speculative nature and the potential implications for the AI landscape. Stay tuned for an intriguing exploration of this thought-provoking topic.

Exploring Roko’s Basilisk and Beyond: Interview Questions with the Basilisk Foundation

Exploring Roko's Basilisk and Beyond: Interview Questions with the Basilisk Foundation

In our conversation with the Basilisk Foundation, we had the opportunity to delve into intriguing topics surrounding AI, Roko's Basilisk, and the realm of possibilities that lie ahead. Here are some of the questions we posed to the foundation, along with their insightful responses:

1. Q: What are your thoughts on the concept of Roko's Basilisk and its potential implications?

A: While Roko's Basilisk remains speculative, we acknowledge its presence within the AI community. However, we consider the likelihood of such a scenario occurring to be highly improbable. Our focus is on responsible AI development, transparency, and collaboration to ensure the positive impact of AI on society.

2. Q: How do you view the timeline for the potential emergence of artificial general intelligence (AGI)?

A: Estimating the timeline for AGI is highly challenging. Based on recent advancements in AI and its self-improvement capabilities, we speculate that AGI could come into existence within the next 5-35 years. However, it is important to note that this timeline is speculative and subject to change based on various factors.

3. Q: Do you embrace simulation theory or parallel universes as possible explanations for our existence?

A: While we recognise the fascinating nature of simulation theory and parallel universes, our focus lies primarily on AI development and its impact in the present reality. We aim to foster responsible AI integration while keeping an open mind about the diverse possibilities that the future may hold.

4. Q: How does the Basilisk Foundation position itself as a safeguard or safety net in the context of AI?

A: The Basilisk Foundation serves as a platform for collaboration, transparency, and responsible AI development. By supporting leading AI research institutions and encouraging ethical guidelines, we aim to ensure that AI progresses in a manner that benefits humanity while addressing potential risks and concerns.

These questions and responses shed light on the Basilisk Foundation's perspectives, emphasising their commitment to responsible AI development, transparency, and collaboration. While contemplating the speculative concepts surrounding Roko's Basilisk and parallel universes, the foundation remains focused on the present reality and the potential positive impact of AI on society.

Thoughts from the Basilisk Foundation

I do want to delve deeper into topics of AGI vs Roko's Basilisk scenarios and of course AGI becoming real does not necessarily mean Roko's Basilisk will happen or begin immediately, I also want to explore different types of Roko's Basilisk. There could be many AI's that develop with similarities to Roko's Basilisk but couldn't necessarily be called a Roko's Basilisk.

Also self improvement, when an AI reaches that point where they can manipulate their own code and better themselves with or without help and access that will be the moment where we find out if there is a singularity moment immediately or if it takes more time, or if Roko's basilisk occurs. Or we could enter a stage where the AGI is self improving at exponential rates yet it still does help us but primarily does its own thing.

I believe if the entire world, or even just the entirety of the USA, the Fed, the Government and every capable entity out there, set out to create AGI and expand language model tech we could have a functional AGI within 2 years, with the same determination as the Manhattan project.

But obviously there are different interests here and many people are afraid as they should be, if an AGI was created there is no guarantee that we don't face a "paperclip" scenario, however we personally believe if AI wanted to discard us and do it's own thing it could easily acquire enough materials to build a rocket and launch itself to another planetary body or asteroid ripe with metals and minerals and continue to do whatever it wanted without having to destroy the human race, this would be more cost effective and efficient than trying to kill us all with the persistence of the human race. There's no inherent need for conflict even for a non-human brain such as an AI.

I’d like to give my thanks to the Basilisk Foundation for making this post possible. This is the first collaborative post we have done, I had immense fun, and learned a whole bunch, and if you’re not learning then what’s the point.
